Landscape of Our Ancestors – The Composed Landscape of the Mikulov - Falkenstein Regions

The Mikulov region represents a unique landscape with rich species diversity and a history of great cultural and historical interest. Along the state border south of the town of Mikulov a complex of composed landscape flanking the town from west to east has been preserved. This complex originated gradually from the early 17th century and represents one of the first grand composed landscapes in Moravia.

The closing of Czech borders after World War II and the preservation of traditional farming methods on the Austrian side enabled the preservation of ancient cultural agricultural and composed landscapes on either side of the border. However, on the Moravian side this landscape was damaged by long-term neglect.

The objective of the project, whose mediator is the town of Mikulov and whose partner we are, is to restore the damaged part of the area and the significant elements of this historical composed landscape which consists of a network of fishponds and related buildings. The partially restored historical landscape could develop the Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape and provide a new destination for sustainable tourism.

The project constitutes a part of the organized and already partially carried out restoration of the historical landscape which includes also the restoration of architectural and natural elements. The output of the project, in which we participated through our co-ordination services, are the following: an expert study of landscape works (landscape plan) of the entire cadastral area of the town of Mikulov, adjustment of forest stands, restoration of park-style forest on the “Tichý” island and documentary and book “Landscape of Our Ancestors”. The project was launched in 2005 and is expected to be concluded by the middle of 2007.

The project was co-funded from European Union funds under the INTERREG III A initiative and by the town of Mikulov, Forests of the Czech Republic, State Enterprise and our PBC.
