Book “THE ALLAHY FISHPONDS, Restored Fishpond Network”

At the beginning of the year, a 90-page book was published, in which 16 experts (mostly natural scientists) assessed the importance of a small fishpond network in the centre of the Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape, which was restored by Forests of the Czech Republic in 1999 – 2001. However, the purpose of the network restoration was not commercial. The restoration of water and landscape relations was guided by efforts to restore and support conditions which would enhance the diversity of species of the entire site and thus embellish one of the most popular places of the Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape, World Heritage Site. The publication presents proof that a well-thought-out restoration can be highly successful. The book provides an abundance of interesting historical information, as its historical context in the development of a cultural landscape is most significant. The conclusion of the book sums up the principles of essential site management, which by following will allow us to conserve the unique landscape and natural site even in the future. The quality of the publication was further acknowledged with a second publication in Czech-English translation in the autumn, funded by Forests of the Czech Republic. The book was used as official expert publicity material of the Czech Republic during the Conference of European State Forests Organizations in Poland in November 2007.

The project was funded by Forests of the Czech Republic, State Enterprise.
